My girlfriend and I are big fans of anal sex. We tried it together and it was her first time. The key to both partners enjoying anal sex is for you to be patient and her to be relaxed and willing to take you in.

That shouldn't be the case if you ask us. Anal sex can be a very pleasant activity for both and it shouldn't be uncomfortable or painful for her.

If she likes the idea of anal sex but she tried it and she found it to be painful you can still help her to learn to enjoy the feelings anal penetration gives her if it's done by you... a caring and attentive man.

I know that most men begin to like the idea of having anal sex because they saw it in porn movies... or just because their partner forbids access to her anus.

But in the way to enjoying anal sex come the preconceptions and misconceptions about anal sex and about the anus and rectum in general.

Of course, the anus is not the cleanest part of our body, but it's not that dirty either. And with some simple precautions you won't have to worry about it's cleanness.

You should always wear a condom while giving anal sex and you and your partner should make sure your penis and her anus are equally clean. You have to be very generous when it comes to lubrication before engaging in anal intercourse.

Because the anus is built so it can only get things out of the body it's not used to having things (your penis, finger, dildo, you name it) inserted. To get it used to that you must work it, be patient.

Now let's get to it. Let me tell you what we did when we first had anal sex.

We took a shower together. We washed each other with water and soap. If you're not going to have penetrative anal sex you can only wash her rectum. Do this either with your bare finger or using surgical gloves.

If you decide you're going to engage in penetrative sex then you should lubricate your finger and gently insert it inside her anus, going up the rectum and looking for any feces. You must be very very gentle.

If she's not comfortable with you putting your finger inside her anus then she should do small warm water enema.

She should not use too much water as the enema irritates the sensitive tissue inside her rectum. When you're both clean and happy go to bed and begin exploring.

If you couldn't put your finger inside her anus even with the lubricated finger it's most likely because she was not relaxed. It's very important that she's relaxed. You don't have to get right into it.

In fact I recommend you play with her until she is in the mood and needs you inside. If she's not aroused and relaxed you're not going anywhere... literally.

Now lubricate her anus with plenty water based lubricant. When you first touch her anus it should contract, because that's the instinct. Not only it's an instinct, but it is also something you and everyone learned to do.

Now, we were at the lubrication part... lubricate her anus and your finger and start to gently rub around it, circling it with your finger. When she becomes relaxed the anus should relax too and open up. This doesn't mean you have to put your penis inside her.... not yet. There are women who can tell when they tense up and know how to relax the exact muscles that facilitate the entrance to her anus, but for now, the woman you're with is just starting down the anal road so take her slow.

Be very careful when you proceed. She must first be very comfortable with your fingers touching her anus before you go any further.

This doesn't happen over night so be very patient about it. It may help you if, at the same time, you also stimulate her vulva or clitoris. It depends on whether she tends to contract her pelvic muscles during this type of stimulation.

When you know when she is tensed up and when she's relaxed and when she feels comfortable with you touching her anus and thinks she's comfortable with anal penetration you can proceed. The best thing I suggest you put inside her is your finger... for now.

Your finger can feel her tensing up and it's just the right size for the first insertions.

Once she has relaxed you can, after thoroughly lubricating your entire finger and her anus, slowly start pushing the tip of one finger inside her anus. If you feel the anus tightening take the tip of your finger out and restart massaging her anus until it opens up again.

Move very slowly, remember, you don't want to hurt her or rush her. When you have inserted your entire finger don't be tempted to move it around just yet. The key is to get her used to having your finger inside her anus (for now).

I told you before that there are women who know how and when to relax their anus. Your partner can learn that. To get more control over her anus she can do Kegels with your finger inside her anus. You'll benefit from her doing the Kegels when you will want to insert bigger objects.

Most women I've been with learned to like the feeling of my finger inside their anus when they had an orgasm, but you'd better not try that... yet.

When she gets used to having your finger inside her ass without moving it you can start to move it around and in and out. Be very slow while doing this, and make sure that she's relaxed and comfortable with what you're doing to her.

When she's comfortable with you moving your finger inside her rectum you can begin to insert two.

You can also get her a pretty present... a butt plug. This will help her get used to being dilated. Butt plugs are the safest thing you can insert inside her anus without the fear that you'll “lose it” inside. In case you didn't know, things can be “sucked in” her rectum if she contracts it so that's why a butt plug is the best thing she can use without any fear.

When she'll be ready to take your penis inside her ass her anus will be relaxed and the head of your penis should be able to “pop” inside. I must tell you that anal sex should not hurt, and that if she tells you it does you must immediately stop and take your penis out. This means that you either didn't use enough lubrication or that she was not relaxed.

Now let's talk about the position she should be in for anal penetration.

Different women like different things so I can't give you the “golden rule” in positions for anal sex. She can either stay on her side in bed while you penetrate her from behind, she can stay on all fours, she can lay on her belly... whatever makes her relax and enjoy it.

Lubrication is one thing you should be concerned about. Choose a lubricant that can be used even when you wear a condom. In my opinion it's very important to wear a condom during anal sex. It will prevent you getting burning of the penis or urethritis. Not only that, but if you're a worried about anal sex being messy wearing a condom should ease your mind about getting dirty. The bacteria that lives in the anus may be harmless while it's in there, but on your penis... not so good.

Pregnancy is something many worry about. Anal sex should not be a method of contraception because 8% of the couples who use anal sex as a method of contraception have babies in just that way. That happens because the semen can leak from the anus and travel from there across the perineum and into the vagina. If you use a condom you won't have to worry about that.

Please remember that unprotected sex is the main way in which you can get AIDS, not to mention a horde of sexually transmitted diseases so I advise you that, no matter what you and your partner do in bed, always wear a condom.
